PlayStation has remained the largest console platform for over 20 years with an installed base of over 150 million consoles, double the size of Xbox, according to Microsoft. Meanwhile, Sony has complained to competition watchdogs about Microsoft's vague promises to keep one of the biggest gaming franchises today, Call of Duty, available on PlayStation in case the acquisition of Activision Blizzard passes. Consoles currently offer media apps that compete with their own media services but not competing game services. Like Apple's iPhone, console makers sell games through their own app store and take a cut of revenue which is reportedly 30%. For example, nearly 80% of all PS5 and PS4 games bought today are digital versions while only 20% are discs that can be resold or lent out. That said, Sony has worked to help PlayStation compete against the service with exclusive games of its own. He also said that he didn’t believe Activision Blizzard CEO Bobby Kotick would put the Call of Duty franchise on the service if the acquisition didn’t go through. Ryan added that the belief was “very commonly held” by publishers across the industry. “I talked to all publishers they unanimously do not like Game Pass, because its value destructive,” he said.
During a meeting with Fidelity investors in February 2022, Ryan said publishers just don’t like Xbox Game Pass or the idea of the subscription model. The case between Microsoft and the FTC continued on Tuesday with video deposition from PlayStation Boss Jim Ryan being a focal point.
